On Saturday, September 18th, outside the Lopez Library, join journalist Lynda V. Mapes on a dive into the world of the endangered southern resident orcas. Powerfully rendered, Mapes’ new book, Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home offers a window into the remarkable intelligence, rich culture, lifelong family and elaborate communication that these powerful marine mammals possess. In 2018 Lynda V. Mapes brought to audiences the story of Tahlequah, the mother orca whale who circled the Salish Sea for more than 1,000 miles and for 17 days with her pod while clinging to the dead newborn calf she would not give up. Orca exposes the roots of the extinction crisis facing the southern resident orca pods of the Salish Sea. What does it mean – and what will it take – for humans, orcas and salmon to live successfully together in the place we all call home?
