Take a deep dive with author Lynda V. Mapes into the world of the southern resident killer whales, one of the most complex, intelligent societies on our planet. The southern residents co-evolved with the salmon of our region and saving the southern resident killer whales from extinction requires rebuilding the salmon populations these orcas depend on. We know from successes throughout our region that change is possible and if given the chance to rebound, nature quickly responds. We know what to do, how to do it, and even where these actions are needed. What is needed now is the political will and funding to make more of these large-scale restoration actions happen, all over our region. If we do our part, orcas and salmon will take care of the rest.

Red Barn Event: Lynda V. Mapes at Wenatchee River Institute

On Tuesday, November 16th at 7:00pm, join Lynda B. Mapes at the Red Barn for a special event hosted by Wenatchee River Institute about her new book Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home.

In Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home journalist Lynda V. Mapes explores the natural history of the orca and the unique challenges for survival of the Southern Resident group that frequents Puget Sound. These whales are among the most urban in the world, a focus of researchers, tourists, and politicians alike. Once referred to as "blackfish" and still known as "killer whales," orcas were for generations regarded as vermin to be avoided or exterminated, then later were captured live for aquariums all over the world. With greater exposure, scientists realized how intelligent the mammal is and are learning about their matriarchal family groups, vocalizations, behavior, and different subspecies.

Today only 74 Southern Resident whales are left, and they are threatened by habitat degradation, lack of chinook salmon (their primary food source), relentless growth, and climate change. Can we reverse the trend?

Beasts of Seattle: Orca with Lynda Mapes

The orca is an apex predator, and yet, without Chinook salmon to feed on and silent waters to hunt in, Seattle’s most famous animal cannot survive. There are only 73 Southern Resident killer whales remaining, and the population will have a hard time growing unless we change our behavior to accommodate them. As part of the Beasts of Seattle podcast series, Town Hall’s Podcast Artist-in-Residence Samantha Allen talks with The Seattle Times environmental reporter and Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home author Lynda V. Mapes about what we need to do for the orca to come home.
